Capital Projects
The Town of Mount Airy contracts with numerous companies for projects such as:
- Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) maintenance
- Pump stations
- Re-paving roads
- Sidewalks / curbs / gutters
- Stormwater pond rehabilitation and upgrades
- Water / wastewater treatment rehabs
- Other projects
The Town has recently purchased a CSX rail line that is currently abandoned and is now overgrown with vegetation between Hill Street to Tempest Lane and is approximately 0.57 miles in length. This section of tracks is proposed to become part of the “Rails to Trails” program and tie into the Town’s existing Rails to Trails network. The Town has conducted soil testing to ensure safety from containments for all pedestrians. See linked Brownfield Application Draft and soil test results above.
Rails to Trails Town View Project
The Town is making improvements along the Rails to Trails between Main Street and Watkins Park. Improvements include construction of a boardwalk and restoration of stormwater management. The trail is to be ADA accessible. See the link above for a plan view of the work that is to be done.
Center Street Water Main Replacement
The Town is updating the water main from Center Street to MD27 from a 6-inch water main to a 12-inch water main. This upgrade will also include an upgrade to the water main on Cross Street. Residents should be aware that this project will result in some lane closures temporarily on Center and Cross Street. See the drawing link above for a plan view of the proposed project.
