Posted in Announcements |MOUNT AIRY TEEN CENTER NOW OPEN !
November 29, 2011Are your teens complaing that they don’t have anything to do and anywhere to go in Mount Airy? They now have another option, and the best part is , its FREE! The Mayor, joined by a group of local volunteers, opened the Mount Airy Teen Center. The Teen Center will be open every other Friday night, with a few exceptions, at the Mount Airy Elementary School (cafeteria entrance), 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
This location was selected as it offers the largest conducive teen environment in Mount Airy, with access to the gymnasium and cafeteria. The Teen Center will provide use of the basketball court, board games, music, video games, and the ever popular safe and chaperoned environment to hang out with a group of friends. Teens should also feel free to bring in a class project, activity, arts, electronic games, etc. We will have a special guest each night to share a skill, experience or an item of interest to the teens. This is a voluntary activity and the teens do not need to participate.
So far adults and teens have made the following suggestions for special guests/themes:
- A guitar teacher to show guitars, discuss what is required to learn the instrument, etc.
- A resident trooper could discuss teen related issues.
- Local theater professionals could discuss the arts.
- Movie night (teens can dress in pajamas).
-Teen karate practitioners who could interest other in the Martial Arts.
-A local skate board shop could talk about skateboard safety.
- A brief overview of fun etiquette items that may surprise (and help) teens.
- Tutoring.
- A dance.
-Venturing Crew 460 Presentation.
-Members of various Town Committees could discuss fun projects where teens could earn community service hours (working at the Carnival)!
-Group field trips to places like Dave and Busters, a paint ball field, Adventure World (fees would be charged for these trips).
-The list goes on and on, and of course we will also have what was extremely popular with the last Teen Center, a safe and warm environment for them to meet their friends and talk.
Our proposed schedule is as follows (Please note: The Mount Airy Teen Center will follow the Carroll County Public School policy regarding inclement weather closings):
December 2nd & 16th
January 13th
February 24th
March 9th & 23rd
During the summer months, the Town’s Parks and Recreation Commission provides free movie nights. This schedule works out very well: The Teen Center will be open Fall - Spring, and the Parks and Recreation Commission will provide movies during the Summer.
What do you need to do? All teens will need a signed permission form from their parent, available at the Teen Center, Town Hall, or at this link from the Mount Airy Town website http://www.mountairymd.org/download/General/TeenCenterApplicationandRules.pdf
This form will list the code of conduct, rules, and regulations and will ask needed information about each attendee. Please note this form must be completed before teens will be allowed to participate in the Teen Center, no exceptions. Parents are encouraged to visit the center and volunteer. For additional information, please contact Mary Beth Ruch at [email protected].
