June 8 Distraction Theft

On June 9, 2022, the Mount Airy Police Department received a report of a theft at a local business located in the 300 blk S MAIN STREET.  Review of video surveillance revealed that at approximately 1:00 p.m. on June 8, 2022, an unknown subject was viewed entering a restricted area and removing an undisclosed amount of money.  We understand that reports of an “armed robbery” have been circulating throughout social media.  While this incident resulted in a significant theft, we want to assure the public that there was no force or threat of force or violence.  The incident is classified as a “distraction” theft.  Investigation has revealed that two black males entered the business.  As one of the suspects distracted the employee, the second suspect entered a restricted area committing the theft.  The theft was not realized until the following day and was immediately reported to the police by the business owner.  The investigation is ongoing. If anyone has any information concerning this incident, they are asked to contact the Mount Airy Police Department at 301-703-1375 or anonymously on “Submit A Tip” through the CRIMEWATCH PORTAL.   Local businesses should take the following precautions to limit the opportunity for these “distraction” thefts: Take steps to limit access to restricted areas in the business. Secure valuables and cash in a safe  Secure exterior doors that are not intended for customer use.
