The Town of Mount Airy has engaged a contractor to perform the replacement of water valve bolts in the Nottingham neighborhood. This work is necessary as the current bolts are susceptible to rust with the potential to break, which would result in a break and lose of water service.
The contractor will begin work on March 3rd at Locksley Lane and West Waterville Road. The process involves a 4 foot by 4 foot patch cut above the valve, excavation to expose the valve, installation of a temporary clamp to remove the existing bolts and installation of the new stainless steel bolts.
This method should not cause an interruption of service. The lines will remain “live” during this process. The only potential for the interruption of service will be if there is a blow-out. This would only occur if he temporary clamp does not hold the valve in place when the corroded bolts are removed. The contractor has a lot of experience in this process and blow-outs are not anticipated.
The work will be conducted in the streets which may result in only one lane of traffic being available. The work will be during the week, thus avoiding peak travel times.
