New Inclusive Playground Design Announced!

Conceptual Inclusive Playground

The results of the Parks Survey are in and we heard you!  Thank you to all those who responded to our posted signs at Watkins Park, the Mount Airy Facebook pages, boosted ads and website!  The top 3 requested features are:

  1. Amphitheater (64%)
  2. Inclusive Playground (52%)
  3. Water feature (49%)

We have received one Conceptual Design so far and it can be viewed by clicking on the link below.

The current plan includes an inclusive playground on the existing skate park asphalt pad at Watkins Park.  It will potentially include a pavilion similar in size to the existing pavilion at Watkins Park which may also be included on the existing asphalt.  The topography adjacent to the asphalt pad lends itself to an amphitheater, so the last image in the link below indicates where a potential amphitheater may be located.  The design includes a cushioned surface called rainbow turf to cover the asphalt under the playground area which meets all safety standards and is easily patched.

This project is still pending final inclusion into the Fiscal Year 2020 budget process and is contingent on receiving grants and private fundraising that will cover most, if not all of the project cost. The current design estimate is $540,000.00. Ava's T21 is partnering with the Town of Mount Airy and will be contributing funds to the Inclusive Playground.  To find out more about Ava's T21 and to contribute, click http://www.avast21foundation.org/.
